You’d probably agree that City Hall is a mess. They could use some professional help down there balancing the books and getting their priorities straight. Instead of yet another slick politician, City Hall needs an accountant.
I am a Certified Public Accountant. I’ve spent a lifetime analyzing the details of complex budgets. In my career I’ve scrutinized budgets big and small - from part of the budget of the US Navy to a mom and pop store down the street.
Volunteering as the President of the San Diego Taxpayer’s association and on the San Diego Citizen’s Budget Committee, I’ve become an expert on San Diego’s budget. No ‘on the job training’ is needed: on the day I’m sworn in to office I’ll be ready to start going through our city’s budget, finances and priorities.
But let me be blunt: as an accountant it’s been my job to look carefully at the numbers and tell my clients the truth about their financial situation. And this is just what I’d like to do as your Councilwoman: look at the numbers carefully and tell you the truth about the situation and what our options are.
It’s no secret that City Hall politicians are usually too afraid of special interests to suggest any real reform. As an accountant, my career has been based upon an understanding of what is right and what is wrong. I wasn’t intimidated by clients and I’m not intimidated by career politicians, bureaucrats, and special interests now.
Over the years as I ran my small business, raised a family, and volunteered in the community, I noticed that City Hall was often a “road block” instead of what it should be - a catalyst for making our community safer, cleaner, and financially sound.
Like you, I’m angry watching our police protection, parks, and roads get worse and worse because the politicians can’t make the tough decisions to cut spending and balance the books. I’m angry that instead of getting the job done, politicians spend their time bickering and involving us in embarrassing scandals.
I want change, now. I want to ferret out the truth about our financial situation. I want to preserve our quality of life. We don’t need yet another politician at City Hall. We need an accountant.
